A Memory to Confess

[The scene is of Vane, from below, with a farmer and his son working in the fields on the ground.]

The proud, noble city of 'Vane'.
The floating city of research and magic.
It was my seventeenth winter in this small, beloved garden in which I was born.

-94-

My brother died.

[A very young Ghaleon, looking about seven or eight, is there with a young man in the background. An older woman is in tears, mouth held open and eyes closed. A shadowy figure behind her plays a stringed instrument.]

-95-

[A group of people are gathered around a statue of Althena, inside the grand hall of a temple. Misty light from high glass windows shines in on five people in white cloaks, while a crowd of other darkly-cloaked mourners stands in the shadows. Three children and a taller figure stand before the statue. The woman also faces the statue, while the other four are turned towards a bier on the opposite side.]

A Memory to Confess

-96-

[We see the same temple from the outside, the ground and rooftop blanketed with snow. Two sets of footprints lead away from the door. The building appears to be in the old part of town.]

[Note: This story involves the Vile Tribe as a race. Unlike their demonic counterparts, the humanoid Vile Tribe members typically have fairer skin, pointed ears, and occasional tattoos or markings across their body. Ghaleon, Latona, Morris, Tagak, Rouj, and the late Zyne are all within the Vile Tribe.]

-97-

[A silhouette of five people gathered in a cemetary. An old man, of the Vile Tribe race, reads from a book. His name is Rouj.]

Rouj: ...With this, there are only five people left of the Vile Tribe who reside in Vane.
Rouj: "The Goddess Althena has given us long life. In exchange, we have deep sadness." That is a poem your older brother once wrote.
Rouj: He was quite the romantic.
Rouj: He had a way with words unlike others, Ghaleon.

[The young Ghaleon, wearing a hat, looks down towards the grave.]

-98-

[The five head to the fence of the cemetary, where others are gathered, all dressed in black, contrasting with the white cloaks the five Vile Tribe members wear. One woman's baby begins to cry.]

-wahh!-
Woman (anxious): ! Excuse me, please excuse me...
-wahh!-

[Rouj approaches the mother and child. The woman looks startled and frightened.]

-wahh!-

[He picks up the baby and smiles warmly. It stops crying. The mother looks relieved.]

Rouj: Oh, you're such a lovely child. What is the name?
Woman: ...Master Zyne was the one who was going to name him.
Rouj: Oh? Well there's nothing we can do about that; he is in his grave now.
Rouj: Ghaleon, what do you think about naming this child Zyne?
Ghaleon: ...My brother's name?

-99-

[Rouj hands the baby back to the mother.]

Woman: But, but!! Oh you are too kind...
Ghaleon: ...You should consider… he was not much as an older brother. All he did was study...
Rouj (in protest): He was a true testament to the greatness of Vane.

[People are laying flowers on the grave. A Vile Tribe man and woman, named Morris and Latona, are also there (we don't know their names until later on).]

Mourner 1: Zyne was a very good man.
Mourner 2: He didn't boast of his kindness.
Mourner 3: Before exams he would keep me company until late in the evening...

[Latona, the woman crying earlier, and Morris are looking at the crowd of people gathered.]

Latona: Almost all these people were students whom Zyne taught at the Guild.
Morris: How many people are there...

Everyone else besides me has fond memories of my brother.

[As they leave, Ghaleon looks up at one of the street lamps.]

Latona: Those lamps were only built six months ago.
Ghaleon: They fall into disrepair easily. They're dangerous.

-100-

[The five of the Vile Tribe leave the crowd of mourners. Rouj and Morris are in the lead.]

Rouj: Now we need to find who will continue Zyne's duties...
Rouj: I'll take on his professorship at the Guild. I was once one of Zyne's students.
Morris: Thank you. I shall take care of his garden.
Morris: Because of the snow, the Guildmistress will return one week later. We must be patient until then.

Rouj: Are you handling your work as Premier well?
Morris: Yes, as the advisor who arrived this year is a great help. There’s only the matter of the forest on the west side.

[Latona turns to look at Ghaleon, who is bareheaded.]

Latona: Ghaleon, what happened to your hat?

-101-

[Another man of the Vile Tribe, Tagak, turns around to look at Ghaleon.]

Tagak: Why did it get lost?
Latona: He was wearing it when we left the shrine.
Rouj: Perhaps it was blown away by this snowstorm.
Latona: The hat was snow-white, made from Chiro Tail.
Morris: Is the hat worth catching a cold? We should look for it later. Let's return already.

[Note: A Chiro is one of those hard-to-kill monsters found in snowy areas with tons of EXP. A Chiro Tail raises your agility.]

Ghaleon: It's already covered in the whiteness of the snow. There's no sense looking for it.

[Tagak turns away from the group and starts walking back.]

Rouj: Tagak?
Tagak: I'm going by the warehouse. Father, please go on ahead.
Ghaleon: ...I'll go, too!

-102-

[We see a large, circular building. Tagak enters.]

The construction of an airship.

[We see a large, incomplete airship under construction inside a hangar.]

Tagak: If only he'd been alive for just one month longer...

It was my brother's last dream.

-103-

[Latona and the others are inside the hangar now.]

Latona (distressed): What shall we do with the ship? It's Zyne's. It's a dream that he left behind.
Latona: Can we really complete it by ourselves?

Building a ship meant something.

Rouj: There's no sense in that.
Rouj: No one can replace Zyne. Since the one who first conceived it is dead, now, there's nothing more to do.
Rouj: We'll dismantle it.

[Cuts to close-up of Ghaleon.]

I felt I had to do something to build the ship.

-104-

Ghaleon: I will complete it.

[Everyone looks to Ghaleon suddenly. He keeps his back turned to them.]

Tagak: Complete Zyne's ship?

[Tagak grips Ghaleon by the collar.]

-105-

Tagak (furious): You? A priest-in-training? You're just an amateur!
Tagak: Why in blazes should you be the one to replace Zyne?

[Morris watches, fist to his chin in thought.]

Ghaleon: Because the plans are almost complete.
Tagak: What about the modifications!? You think you do this all just by what's laid down on paper?

Rouj: Ghaleon, the airship is something that will carry lives on board.
Rouj: You cannot think of it so lightly.
Tagak (as he leaves): I do not feel like following the whims of some boy.

[Tagak leaves the room.]

-106-

[Ghaleon is reading on the floor of his brother’s study, books strewn around him. Rouj and Tagak are elsewhere in a workshop.]

Rouj: Well, the boy looks serious. He's been going through Zyne's study for the last seven days.
Tagak: How do you know he's serious? Really?

[Morris is inside Zyne's study with Ghaleon, who seems bothered by his presence.]

Morris (smiling slightly): Didn't you used to hate Zyne?
Ghaleon: He was Vane's foremost researcher in magic power. I respect him.
Morris: But, you didn't like him?

-107-

[Latona enters with a tray of food. Now that she doesn't have the winter coat on, we can see some strange markings that look like tattoos above her chest.]

Latona (slightly annoyed at his presence): Morris.
Morris: We'll continue this some other time.
Morris: Latona wouldn't like to hear it. So rude of her.

Latona: It's no good, not even coming to the kitchen to get a meal.

[Ghaleon continues his reading while stuffing a piece of bried into his mouth; Latona smiles.]

Latona (smiling fondly): You're just like Zyne when you do that.

[A little ways away, we see a little girl, human, running through the hallway. Her name is Nia.]

Nia: Ghallie!

[Note: Nia is saying 'oniichama' which is a cute term of endearment for someone like an older sibling. She only addresses Ghaleon with it, hence my choice of translation.]

-108-

[Nia throws open the curtain to Ghaleon’s room. A voice calls from the next doorway over.]

Ghaleon: I’m over here, Ghaleon.
Nia (finding him): Ghallie, Ghallie
Ghaleon: Ah, welcome back.
Ghaleon: Where is the Guildmistress? Didn't you two return together?
Nia: Oh, Mommy? ...This way!

[Latona’s figure is silhouetted by the window.]

Latona: ...I'll stay behind. I don't much feel like going to the east part of town.

[Ghaleon and Nia exit. They go through the streets of Vane.]

Ghaleon: How was Meribia?
Nia: There were so many biiiig ships! Ghallie, have you ever been there?
Ghaleon: Oh no, I...

[Ghaleon and Nia pass beneath a bridge. Two people are walking by them and, at the sight of Ghaleon, look scared and duck into the shadows.]

-109-

I've never before left Vane.

Nia: Mommy!!

[Nia runs towards the Guildmistress, who is just exiting a carriage as Morris and other officials stand by. The Guildmistress is a pleasant-faced woman with a mass of very curly blonde hair, wearing a long black dress with flowing skirts. She faces Ghaleon to speak.]

Guildmistress: I heard about Zyne. He was my teacher as well. I'm very sorry.
Guildmistress: I also heard you will take over the airship's construction. So, what will you do?

-110-

Guildmistress: I ask that you allow the students in the Guild to assist you.
Ghaleon: Well...

[Ghaleon recalls an earlier scene. Four students stand before him, looking very upset. All of them address Ghaleon.]

Student 1: We'll work hard, we won't be a burden on you!!
Student 2: We promise not to give you any trouble.
Student 3: We really respected Master Zyne.
Student 4: We wish to be useful. We'll do anything.
Students: Please...

[Ghaleon looks down without giving a response.]

-111-

[We're in the library, Ghaleon perusing the shelves as Morris walks up.]

Morris: Why did you decline their offer?
Ghaleon: That... doesn't concern you.
Morris (smugly): The section on studies of magic power is one shelf over.

[Morris puts his hands over the books on the shelf Ghaleon is looking over.]

Morris: Ah, let me show you.

[Morris nears Ghaleon.]

Morris: You're just jealous.

[Ghaleon slaps Morris's hand out of the way.]

-112-

[We're now in Rouj's quarters. Ghaleon lays a stack of papers before him.]

Ghaleon: These are all of the blueprints that my brother left behind.
Ghaleon: There are also 26 other drafts.
Rouj: Ghaleon, you’ve told me this already......

Ghaleon: I tried to account for all the missing parts by consulting his notes.
Rouj: ......
Rouj: There are too many lines here. Why is it split up this way?
Ghaleon: Each line changes the level of resistance and affects the design.
Rouj: There are so many moving parts to this.
Ghaleon (pulling out more schematics): Perhaps my brother meant to establish the level this way.
Ghaleon (writing on a slate): If we can calculate the way mana moves the gears...

-113-

Rouj (scowling): Hm...
Rouj: I can't take it. Did you really master all this in a matter of two weeks?
Ghaleon: I'm still just studying the plans. I haven't applied them yet.

Ghaleon: Rouj, let's do this. If you're around, then we can complete the ship.

[We see some kind of magical blast striking some rocks. Cut back to the room where Rouj addresses Tagak. It seems Ghaleon was able to convince him.]

Rouj: You're the only one left in Vane who can work with metals. How about it?
Tagak: I'm not looking for fame.
Rouj: There's not much time left until I'm old and gone. Why not leave something behind for people to remember me when I'm dead?
Tagak: I've heard that line 184 times already.

-114-

[Ghaleon walks to the door of Morris's office, where a man in the Guild is standing outside.]

Ghaleon: Where is Morris?
Man: ! He is inside here, as the conference is now finished.

[Inside the office, Morris is at his desk. The light shining in through the windows contrasts with the rest of the dimly-lit room.]

Morris: Ah, you rarely come by the east part of town.
Morris: I wonder if you have an answer yet to the question I asked the other day.
Ghaleon: Answer to what?
Morris: Why do you wish to build the ship?
Ghaleon: ......It costs as much to dismantle it as to finish building it.
Ghaleon: Plus, the completion of a magical airship would contribute greatly to Vane's power and knowledge.
Morris: ...Well then. Things were just about to get boring.
Morris: Allow me to handle the provision of raw materials.

-115-

[Morris walks to the window and looks out.]

Morris: Did you know that for some years now the east part of town has had a 'baby boom' period?
Morris: Looking ahead, the Guild plans to expand the dormitories and school facilities starting this year.
Morris: That includes expansion over the 'ruins' of the western part of town.

Morris: Really, they’re so fertile...
Ghaleon: ? Morris, why don’t you have a child yourself?
Morris: And you say that so easily.
Morris: I had to give up the week before last. Perhaps it would be better if I were dead.

[Morris refers to Latona, and how the death of Zyne made her more introverted with her feelings.]

[Cut to a shot outside the warehouse (the circular building).]

-crash-
Tagak: Ghaleon!!

-116-

[Ghaleon parts a curtain at the doorway to the workroom, holding a pen. We see Rouj next to Nia who is on the floor with broken dishes around her, trying to clean up.]

Tagak: Ghaleon, what is this girl doing here?
Rouj (sees Nia picking up broken glass): Ah, that's dangerous, don't touch it.

[Tagak lifts the girl up towards Ghaleon.]

Ghaleon: Nia, this isn't a place you can play in. What about your afternoon studies?
Ghaleon: If you keep ignoring your studies, you won't become a great Guildmistress like your mother.
Nia: But I don't wanna become a Guildmistress.
Ghaleon: Nia.
Nia: I wanna become Ghallie's wife!
Ghaleon: Ni...

[Nia is crying. Rouj is laughing hysterically in the background.]

Rouj: Gahahahah!

-117-

[We're in the hangar adjacent to there, where Latona is working a little on the airship.]

Latona (to Nia): If you just want to help, that's fine.
Latona (to Ghaleon): And when you were that age, you were always following Zyne around.
Ghaleon: ......

[Nia is upset. Ghaleon leads Nia away.]

Ghaleon: You won’t pester Rouj with a bunch of questions, right?
Nia: Yeah.
Ghaleon: Will you listen to what Tagak told you?
Nia: Uh-huh.
Ghaleon: Be patient, don't run off again.
Nia: Yeah.
Ghaleon: You can come by after you're done with your studies.
Nia: Ok.

[Vane at night, the ruins with a backdrop of stars and the Blue Star dominating the sky. Ghaleon is working in Zyne’s study, but notices something out his window and climbs up to look.]

-118-

[We see Latona seated on some rocks amidst the ruins, singing, as the Blue Star looms large in the background.]

Latona is singing. A requiem for Althena which my brother enjoyed.

[Morris listens at his window, gazing into his wineglass. Rouj and Tagak look up through the window of the workroom, the former smiling while the older one is a bit annoyed. Ghaleon sits in his windowsill, gazing out.]

-119-

[Cut to an aerial view of the entire city of Vane. The west side is sparsely populated; the east looks like the main part of the city, with its grid roads and buildings. In the center is a collection of older buildings.]

Long, long ago, in our ancestors' time, Vane was full of us, the Vile Tribe.
Before long, visitors who loved this city, isolated from the rest, forged a new history in the east part of town.

[Closeup of some ruins within the city.]

As we of the Vile Tribe were long-lived, we grew old, unknown to anyone, within the central garden. ...Yet what will remain of us?

-120-

[Daytime now. Ghaleon and Latona are in the ruins. Ghaleon has rolled-up papers under his arms.]

Latona: Have you heard from Morris? Very soon these ruins will be no more.

[Cut to a frame of a nearby tree.]

Latona: The base of that tree was your and Zyne's favorite place. On clear days you would lie in the sun over there.

[Cut to an old, worn-down road nearby.]

Latona: You'd go around the covered paths in the west part of town to watch the sunset.
Latona: You kept stumbling over and crying, because you were always looking up at the skies while walking, trying to be like Zyne.

Latona (smiling fondly): And every morning Rouj and my father would secretly clean up the paths. You probably didn't know that.
Ghaleon: ...I don't remember much about my childhood.

-121-

Latona: What about the corner fence? You slipped while trying to climb it, cut your forehead, and caused an uproar.

[We see a very young Ghaleon looking with blood coming down his forehead, Latona and others around him. There is also a silhouette of Zyne-- who looks remarkably like Ghaleon in his later years. Cut back to present-day Ghaleon.]

Ghaleon: ...I don't remember much.
Latona: You forgot?

Latona: Of course. It was only a minor thing, so you'd likely forget. Memories fade. That part of town is just ruins now, right?
Latona: ...This might be the same Vane in which I was born, but little by little it changes into a town I no longer know.

-122-

Latona (turned away, towards the tree): It’s still Vane, even without Zyne. But where else would I be? Sometimes I don't even know.

Ghaleon: Let's go back to the warehouse. The wind is picking up.

[We're back at the warehouse now. A few of the students outside who are carrying lumber look up at Ghaleon.]

Ghaleon: Ah.
Ghaleon: ...What are you doing?
Student 1 (frightened): We were told to gather some raw materials... That's all, I swear.

[Ghaleon and Latona enter to find Morris inside.]

Ghaleon: These are the things I requested. Everything I ordered has now arrived. …Thank you.
Morris: If you could double-check this list, please.

[Morris holds up a sheet of paper.]

-123-

[One girl student looks up at the airship in awe. Tagak walks up behind her and she accidentally drops what she's carrying.]

-shock-
Student 2: I'm... I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Tagak: No... that's all right.

[The girl is sweating, her hands trembling.]

Student 2: I'm so sorry...

[Tagak abruptly gets up and pushes the curtain aside, leaving the room. Ghaleon looks after him.]

Ghaleon: Tagak.
Tagak: ...Whenever people catch sight of me, they go silent and clear the road.

-124-

[Both Ghaleon and Tagak are walking outside.]

Ghaleon: ...Tagak, it’s not because they hate you.

[Tagak has his back turned, looking up.]

Tagak: I can’t put up a cheerful façade like Morris.
Tagak: I can't take having to remain silent about it.

[We're back in Zyne's study. Ghaleon is drawing plans while Nia is climbing on the desk and into an alcove.]

Nia: Ghallie.

[Nia picks up something on the shelf. It’s a crude carving of something with an eye.]

Nia: What's this, a fish? Why is it blue?
Ghaleon: It's probably painted blue.
Nia: What is it?
Ghaleon: I don't know.
Nia: You never asked your brother about it?
Ghaleon: I hardly ever spoke with my brother, so I wouldn't know.

-125-

Nia: Oh hey, the other day... I said 'bye bye' to my mother.
Ghaleon: Really now.
Nia: What did you used to say to your brother?
Ghaleon: ......Nothing.

[We're in a flashback. It's outside, birds are flying overhead, and we can see a silhouette of Zyne looking up.]

Since my brother always had his head in the clouds.

-126-

[We see a silhouette of a very young Ghaleon running after his older brother, who still looks up as he walks.]

My brother never had much of an interest in me, so he never even noticed me always running after him.

[Now we see a silhouette of Zyne's funeral with present-day Ghaleon; though, Ghaleon is off to the side away from the rest who are gathered around Zyne's body.]

And so, I never had much of an interest in my brother.

-127-

[We see several silent frames. The first of the circular warehouse from outside, while it rains; Ghaleon in the study, working on diagrams with Rouj; Latona studying some plans while she constructs a component; Morris outside carrying materials through the snow; and Rouj and Tagak working on another part of the ship. The ship looks to be much further along in completion.]

-128-

[Nia is running along, carrying something in her hand. Ghaleon is above on the rafters working on the ship.]

Nia: Ghallie, Ghallie, look, look!
Nia: This blue thing, it's the same color as the fish.
Nia: I caught it just now in the garden... Oh!

[Something slips from her hands and a few feathers go flying. A bird flies out. The ‘fish’ carving is still in her hand.]

-129-

Ghaleon: Oh...

[The bird flies higher and higher, then out of sight. Ghaleon looks up pensively, and Nia looks toward Ghaleon, worried.]

Nia: But I wanted to show it to you, Ghallie.
Ghaleon: Don't worry, I saw it clearly.
Nia: Really? You saw it all?
Ghaleon: Yeah.
Ghaleon: Nia, birds wish to be free. They look sad if they're caged up.

[Nia smiles.]

Nia: Ok.

Rouj: Oh, Nia dear.
Nia: Now maybe this fish will fly away, too.
Rouj: Hm? Oh that isn't a fish.
Nia: What?

-130-

[Latona and Tagak are elsewhere around some machinery, overhearing the conversation.]

Latona (cheerfully): It's a bird.
Nia: A bird!?
Latona: That’s what Zyne said.
Latona: Right, Tagak?

[We see a flashback frame of Tagak seated outside a building. Zyne holds the carving out, pointing to it.]

Tagak: It was about 14 or 15 years ago. He brought it to my place saying 'this is a blue bird, please paint it.'

[Cut to back in the present.]

Rouj: And suddenly birds were in his dreams. I wonder why that is...
Nia: I like birds!!

[Morris is there, leaning back against the windowsill and looking outside.]

Morris: The inside of his head must have been just like that kid's.
Morris: Having sweet dreams of the things you love, and looking forward to the unknown.

-131-

[We see another silhouette of Zyne surrounded by birds flying about.]

Ghaleon: He was always looking into the distance, standing still in a flock of birds.
Ghaleon (looking down, pensively): Where did he want to go after building that airship?

[It’s later. Rouj steps into the place where Ghaleon is working, carrying some papers.]

Rouj: Ghaleon, if you'll excuse me.
Rouj: This is the amount the airship's energy storage tank can carry. Could you double-check this?

-132-

[Ghaleon looks over the plans.]

Ghaleon: ......
Ghaleon: Is this right?
Rouj: I re-did it eight times. Even in Zyne's design there are no gaps in the list of stones. This is the amount he wanted.
Ghaleon: ...This is enough to circle Lunar three times...

[The background is of the eastern half of Lunar from Eternal Blue: the Salyan Desert, Madoria Plains, and Western Katarina are distinctly there, as well as some of Eastern Katarina and the tail end of the Minea Sea regions.]

Ghaleon (staring over documents): Rouj, why would this amount of energy be necessary?
Ghaleon: This isn't an ordinary magical airship.
Rouj: Precisely.
Ghaleon: Will it be armed?
Rouj: I doubt Zyne would have wanted that.

[Note: When Ghaleon says ‘Lunar’, the text uses the characters for ‘land’ or ‘continent’.]

-133-

Ghaleon: Even using the magic barrier in case of damage would not warrant that much energy.
Rouj: In any case, if we're going to consider it further then we must examine Vane itself. We should replenish the energy each time.
Rouj: But why would we need to store so much energy?

[Ghaleon gets up suddenly.]

Ghaleon: ...What if he meant not to return?
Rouj: What?

[We see the Guildmistress standing in the cemetary over Zyne's grave, flowers in her hand and birds flying overhead. Ghaleon is at the gate.]

-134-

[Many flowers are placed atop Zyne’s grave.]

Guildmistress: I hope Nia wasn't too much of a bother? ... I see, that's good.
Guildmistress: If there's anything I can do, please tell me.
Ghaleon: .........
Ghaleon: Why was my brother trying to build a ship?
Guildmistress (intent): Why are you building it?

-135-

Ghaleon: I don't know.
Guildmistress: Why are you taking over its construction?
Ghaleon: I don't know.
Guildmistress: Ghaleon.

[We see a flashback of when Ghaleon fell and hurt his forehead. Latona is beside him, tending to his wound. Zyne’s silhouette and two other Vile Tribe men are off to the side; Zyne apparently unconcerned.]

Ghaleon: I know nothing about my brother.

Ever since that day...
My brother became very distant.
His silence was so dreadful.

[A close-up of Ghaleon, back in the present.]

Ghaleon (distressed): Every time I think of my brother, I lose my breath. It's like I'm no longer myself.

Just by thinking of him I felt heat well up in the back of my throat.

-136-

[The Guildmistress holds Ghaleon's face in her hands and smiles.]

Guildmistress: That’s because you’re not the person you think you are.

[She is holding a book in her hand, smiling.]

Guildmistress: ...He was quite careless.

[She hands the book to Ghaleon.]

Guildmistress: Do what you like with this.
Guildmistress: I was asked to burn it. But I couldn't and would rather return it to his grave.

[She stands back up, her dress blowing in the wind.]

Guildmistress: That 'fish' that Nia found, it's something that was built when you were three years old.

-137-

[Nighttime in Vane; the Blue Star illuminates the ruins. Ghaleon enters Zyne's study, sits down at his desk, and opens the book.]

Ghaleon: A date... It's a journal?

"Walking."

Ghaleon: ?

"One scratch."

Ghaleon: ?

"Skinned elbow and knee."
"Slight fever."

Ghaleon: ......

-138-

[We see a silhouette of a bird flying.]

"Fine weather on a that particular day."
"Ghaleon looked to the sky and asked the name of a blue bird."

[Flashback of a very young Ghaleon and Zyne looking out the window of Zyne's study.]

"I could not answer without knowing. I was no expert."

[We see the object Nia later picked up lying on the desk.]

There are so many things I didn't see when I was too close.

[Note: Quoted lines are text in the journal. Unquoted lines are still Ghaleon's thoughts, as always.]

-139-

[We see two curtained doors, one with light spilling out and the other dark.]

Every night before I went to sleep, I would strain my ears to hear
what was on the other side of the one wall in between us.
A cough, the scratch of a pen, the sound of shuffling paper.

[Back in the present in Zyne's study, Ghaleon is seated in the same chair, his knees drawn to his chest and head down, sobbing.]

He's gone. My brother, he's gone. He's nowhere. I'll never see him again.

-140-

[It is now morning. We're outside the circular building, the warehouse, as a wisp of smoke rises up from in front. Outside, Ghaleon is burning a book -- the book -- and Rouj approaches.]

Rouj (smiling): Oh, you're up early.

[Ghaleon looks down, smiling slightly--for the first time.]

Rouj: ...Do you know yet why he wanted to build the ship?
Ghaleon: ...Regardless of what he said, I don't know for sure. I don't even understand my brother himself.
Ghaleon: But things are becoming somewhat easier now.

-141-

[Rouj pats Ghaleon on the back.]

Rouj: Well, that's not so bad, is it?

[Rouj is about to go back inside.]

Ghaleon: Rouj.
Rouj: Hm?
Ghaleon: Thank you for helping me.
Ghaleon: We got this far because you were here.
Rouj: Hm, well do what you wish now.
Rouj (winks): If you want to thank me, then get the ship flying safely.

-142-

Rouj: I need to go inside already. There are a few things I need to take care of.
Ghaleon: Right.

[Rouj goes inside. Ghaleon continues burning the book.]

Ghaleon: If what Rouj said was right...
Ghaleon: About the amount of energy...

[Ghaleon looks up at the curtained door into the building, noticing Rouj has gone inside.]

-143-

[Ghaleon enters.]

Ghaleon: ...Rouj?

[We see Rouj inside, lying on the ground unconscious and gripping another curtain with his right hand.]

-144-

[Rouj is lying in bed, surrounded by Ghaleon and the others. Ghaleon is the one seated beside him, like Latona did for Zyne.]

Rouj: Sorry, this is such a bad time to bring this upon you.
Rouj: My days are coming to an end.

[Tagak and Morris are stoic. Latona tears up and turns around.]

-145-

Tagak: Please give my regards to mother.
Rouj (smiling slightly): Right.

[Rouj smiles and pats Ghaleon on the head.]

Ghaleon: Rouj... Rou--

[Rouj's hands go limp. The final frame is a silhouette of the remaining four standing over a new grave in the cemetary. No humans surround them this time.]

-146-

[Ghaleon looks down, mouth closed and jaws clenched. Tagak is beside him, looking forward.]

Tagak: I will die too, someday. Even you will see death.

[An overhead view of the ruins and surrounding city. Large stone pillars reach into the air.]

Tagak: Those who knew us will die as well. And so the day will come where we must leave everything behind. That is fine.
Tagak: We go on breathing because of those who have gone before us, those whose names we do not even know.

[The four return through the ruins; Morris and Latona lead, while Tagak hangs behind, comforting Ghaleon who clings to him as they walk.]

Tagak: Even if the name of my father fades, those students whom my father taught will remain in Vane to succeed him.

-147-

[A starless nighttime. We see the airship even closer to completion. Ghaleon stands before it, seemingly in despair. A flame appears in his hand.]

-puff-

[Ghaleon holds the flame close to a rolled set of plans. Latona runs in.]

Latona: No!

[She takes the plans away from him.]

Latona: You're going to give up after coming this far? Is this really what you want?
Ghaleon (shouting): Rouj is gone. It might fall from the sky. There's no reason to continue building the airship.
Latona (passionately): The ship will fly!
Ghaleon: What makes you say that?

-148-

Latona: Because it's Zyne's ship.

[Latona is in tears, clutching the stack of papers to herself.]

Latona: ...Please, Ghaleon. Don't take any more memories of Zyne away from me.

[Ghaleon is stricken.]

Latona: You'll be fine. Wouldn't you regret just leaving it here!?

[The next day a group of students approach the door of the school. Ghaleon then approaches the same door.]

-149-

-sigh-
-grip-

[He opens the door. The students inside look stunned. One drops his book.]

Student 1: Ma... Master Ghaleon!

[Ghaleon takes a deep bow.]

Ghaleon: This may not concern you. But, Rouj has passed away.
Ghaleon: After completing the separate parts, we must assemble them, and then we need only to test it. I wish for you to aid in the construction of the airship.
Student 1 (worried): Please, raise your head. We... we're not that...
Student 2 (worried): Please, take us wherever you wish...

[A crowd of students gathers around Ghaleon, who is surprised.]

Student 3: We might be able to help too, right?
Student 4: We will, we'll do whatever we can!
Student 5: Please let us help!

-150-

[Back in the hangar, we see a few dozen students on the rafters helping assemble various parts of the ship. Ghaleon is on the floor, monitoring everything.]

Morris: Well... I say... Is this supposed to be a good thing?
Ghaleon: If all you want to do is mock the effort, then go back.
Morris (smiling slightly): No, that's not it...

[One of the students calls down from the rafters.]

Student 1: Master Ghaleon! We want to carry up a few of the moving parts. May we construct more pulleys?
Ghaleon: ? Your magic should be sufficient. Does the Guild not teach physical magic?

-151-

Student 1: We learned that, but we need to move nearly 100 part--

[Another student clamps his hand over the first's mouth.]

Ghaleon: ?
Student 2: Never mind, we'll do it!!

[The same student flips through a book, sweating.]

Student 2: I'd better not mess up the incantation.

[The student kneels next to one piece, book opened on the floor beside him, as he starts chanting.]

Student 2: I, Markore, summon thee, the spirit of the wind, to carry out my wish to...

[The student raises his hands and causes a large piece to levitate above him. After he's done, he wipes his forehead, exhausted.]

Student 2: Phew...
Ghaleon: Why did it take you so long?
Student 2: What...!?

[Ghaleon turns around, sees another piece, and by gesturing two fingers lifts it easily into the air.]

Student 2: !!

[Note: Ghaleon’s gesture looks like Zophar’s when he casts Hell Wave (Sega CD Eternal Blue only).]

-152-

[A crowd of students rushes Ghaleon, shocked.]

Student 2: Ma... Master Ghaleon!! How did...!!
Student 3: Your incantation... what about the incantation!?
Ghaleon: ?
Student 4: How can you use magic without an incantation...!?
Student 5: It can't be

[Morris is behind the group.]

Student 6: But, even Master Zyne and Rouj always used incantations...
Morris (smugly): That was in class. He did that because a magician must be familiar with all the proper words and chants.

[Morris extends his hand and a flame appears.]

Morris: Since the Vile Tribe has blood borne abilities, we don't need incantations. See?
Student 7: Amazing!!

[Female students crowd around Morris, who is quite pleased with the reaction.]

Student 7 (eagerly): Amazing!! That was amazing!! Could we ever do that someday!?
Morris: Ha ha ha, that would likely be impossible.

[Latona arrives at the door with a group of more, older students.]

Latona: Ghaleon, these would be some of Zyne's former students at the Guild.

-153-

[Everyone seems to be working on the ship, cheerfully and enthusiastically. The Guildmistress and Nia are here, too, handing out food baskets.]

Guildmistress (to students): Are you getting along well with everyone? I hope none of you are hurt at all.

[Tagak is with another student setting up supports.]

Tagak: The odd-numbered units go from the inside outward.

[Another student unrolls a large cloth.]

Student 1: Oh look! This was even dyed with herbs from Iluk, right?

[Another two female students are smiling; Ghaleon sips coffee, watching, while male students in the back take some sandwiches from their baskets.]

Student 2: We haven't become a burden or anything, have we!? Oh that's good!!

-154-

[A few of the other students bring a tapestry by.]

Student 1: Hey look!!

[A couple of students are carrying tools and nails past Latona, looking up, worried. Latona seems very standoffish and aloof.]

Student 2: We have a few extra screws here...

[Another female student rolls a tray of refreshments past Tagak, who has his back turned to them. Nia looks up, smiling, while the student holds up two teapots towards him.]

Student 3: Master Tagak, would you like some tea? Hot, or cold?
Tagak (nails in his mouth): Lukewarm kids.

[Note: Tagak meant lukewarm a bit sarcastically, directing it at the two girls.]

[The students cheerfully continue working on the airship until night falls.]

-155-

[We see the airship now, the exterior complete. The students have left.]

Latona (looking up in wonder): Say, if he had finished building the ship... Where do you think Zyne would have gone?
Latona: Ghaleon? Is there anyplace you’d like to go?
Ghaleon: ...You mean leaving Vane?
Latona: Right, that's what the airship is for.
Morris: Instead of Zyne, hm?
Latona: I'd go and see the things that Zyne couldn't see, that he missed the opportunity to see.
Tagak: A journey isn't a bad idea. Now that my father has passed away, there's no longer a reason for me to stay in Vane.

-156-

Morris: There are still a lot of Vile Tribe towns left in the Frontier. We need to look to our future, isn’t that right?
Latona (irritated): And what about your work?
Morris: I can have all my affairs settled here in under a week.

[Cut to a shot of Vane from the ground below, nighttime. Vane hovers high above the Goddess Tower, the Blue Star dominating the sky.]

Morris: A journey on the airship opens up limitless destinations. We could circle all of Lunar.
Morris: We could go higher than even Vane, drawing nearer to the Blue Star, chasing the night sky while thinking always of the next day.

[We're back inside the room where Rouj died. Tagak is carrying away a few things, Ghaleon with him.]

Ghaleon: Are you taking some mementos with you?
Tagak: These are some things which my father left behind. Take what you wish.

-157-

Ghaleon: ...Tagak, should I do the same thing with what my brother left behind?
Tagak: ...If that's what you want, then you should.

[We're back inside Zyne's study. It's the next day and Ghaleon is seated on the desk with a few things collected beside him: binoculars, a book, a carved bird, and a few other random things.]

Ghaleon (smiling, eyes closed): ......
Ghaleon: ...Brother

-158-

[Ghaleon steps outside into the street underneath the bridge he and Nia walked through earlier. He walks up the road and two students pass him, smiling. These are the same two students who shied away from him and Nia.]

Student 1 (cheerfully): Ah, hello Master Ghaleon!
Student 1: We'll be coming by the warehouse again this afternoon.
Ghaleon (smiling): Ah, thank you very much.

[Ghaleon is now in the Guildmistress's office.]

Ghaleon: Once we check the airship's power, we can finally test the airship itself. If possible, I'd like to be present.
Guildmistress: I don't know what could happen during the test, so that would be fine. I will help you--as Vane's Guildmistress.
Guildmistress (smiling reminiscently): It would be fun for me, too, to see Zyne's ship. ...Hm, Zyne... Everything he did was somehow influential.
Guildmistress: Influential for those who listened to his lectures, for those who helped with his experiments. He was like a light which warmed everyone's spirits.

-159-

Ghaleon (soberly): ...If the ship will fly, then perhaps... Perhaps I can finally see some things I don't know yet know about.
Ghaleon (gazing out the window): Guildmistress, I... It’s not that I dislike the way Vane has become.
Ghaleon: But there are so many humans here I don't know, all studying hard, to become proper citizens of Vane, for the sake of this town!

[Ghaleon smiles, and the Guildmistress smiles in return.]

Ghaleon: It's truly great that I was born in this town I love.

[We're back at the warehouse and hangar, inside which are several students at work.]

Student 1: Why would they need such a large tank to store energy...
Student 2: Maybe they need backup fuel.
Student 3: But even then...

-160-

Student 4: What would use up that much energy...
Student 5: Maybe it’s something that Master Zyne made...
Student 6: Ah, I know what it is.
Ghaleon: What are you all talking about?
Student 6 (flustered): Ma... Master Ghaleon!!

[The other students just now notice Ghaleon at the door.]

Student 6 (excitedly): Well... The ship will go everywhere, right? As in... the entire world...
Student 6: Like, over the plains, around volcanoes, around ice, through clear skies, through rain, through wind
Student 6: So the crew needs to be protected in every possible climate--that's why the ship needs that much energy. Right?
Student 6: Enough energy to safely deal with anything that could happen while flying...
Student 6: So that the skies will be open no matter what hits them!

[Ghaleon looks a little stunned while the student rambles on, apparently answering the question he and Rouj couldn’t figure out.]

Student 6: Well, I'll see you tomorrow then! Good night.

[The rest of the students leave; Ghaleon is still in the hangar, seated and gazing over plans, head resting in his hand.]

Ghaleon: ......
Ghaleon: The climate was never his concern...

-161-

[The airship is complete now. Only Ghaleon and the others of the Vile Tribe are in the room. Latona looks up at the airship, which dwarfs her in scale.]

Latona: All that's left is tomorrow's test! Shall we take a break?
Morris: Tagak, won't you come down and have some tea with us?

[Tagak is in the lower rafters of the ship, examining something.]

Morris: ...What is it?
Tagak: ...Zyne scribbled something up here.

[Ghaleon rushes up. The rest, including Tagak, watch from below.]

Ghaleon: Zyne!? Let me see!!
Ghaleon: It's my brother's words, definitely. The upper-right--
Tagak. It was concealed by magic until now, so I didn't notice.
Latona (excited): What does it say!? Read it!!

Ghaleon: "This airship is meant for the development of Vane ...... and the future of the Vane Guildmistress."

-162-

[Ghaleon stares silently.]

Tagak: The development of Vane...
Latona (upset): The future of the Guildmistress...!?
Morris (upset): ...The ship, it's not for Zyne nor the Vile Tribe, but for humans...!?

Ghaleon: ......ha...!! Ha ha ha ha!!

[Ghaleon sits back and starts laughing.]

Of course. The one who wanted to leave Vane aboard this airship...
...was me, not my brother.

-163-

What my brother wanted to build wasn't the airship itself, but a part of Vane's history.
He wanted to leave something behind in Vane as proof of his existence.

Morris (scowling): ...Oh man, just another thing Zyne did.
Tagak (smiling faintly): But it's just like him.

[Ghaleon leans his head against the rafter with writing, eyes closed, smiling.]

Because my brother still loved Vane.

[Latona looks away, desolate.]

-164-

[The sun rises. Latona is in her room by the window. When the light strikes her face, we see her eyes teary as if she’s been there all night. After the sun has risen, she leaves and passes by two students in the street.]

Latona (aghast): !!

[She sees both of them holding books.]

Latona (sharply): That... that...
Latona: That isn't one of Zyne's books, is it...!?

[The students shrink back in fear.]

-165-

[Latona enters Zyne's study to find it completely barren--no books, bookshelves, desks, or artifacts. She falls forward, catching the doorway to hold her balance.]

-pat-
Latona: What... What is this...

[Ghaleon turns around and smiles. Two students are there happily looking over some books.]

Ghaleon: Latona.

[At his feet are boxes of books.]

Ghaleon: I decided to distribute some of the things my brother left behind...
Ghaleon: Otherwise they'd just be left behind in this room to collect dust and rot away.
Ghaleon: It's better to have him remain in people's hearts as a memory.

Ghaleon: He's made so many people happy, my brother...
Ghaleon (holding a book out to her): Latona?

-166-

[We're outside now, and so is the airship, ready for its maiden voyage. It’s a sunny, pleasant day, with a high of sixty and a five percent chance of precipitation.]

Guildmistress (surprised): ...May I, really?
Ghaleon: Essentially, the ship can be piloted by one person. I’d intended to be that person, but this is what my brother requested.
Guildmistress: I will only come on board to lend assistance. Is that all right?

Guildmistress (smiling): ...If that was Zyne’s wish!
Guildmistress: Whatever happens, I'm sure I will be all right. I'm an ace in teleportation magic!

Student 1 (excited): We have finished charging the energy.
Student 2: All parts are functional.

Morris (smugly): The route to be used for testing has been blocked. Feel free to crash it wherever!
Ghaleon (confident): Sorry to disappoint you, but the ship will not fail.

-167-

[The ship is in full view, lit by the sun.]

Ghaleon: My brother's ship will most definitely fly.

[Ghaleon heads towards the ship.]

Tagak: Will you and the Guildmistress be fine aboard?
Ghaleon: Yeah.

[Ghaleon passes by Nia and pats her head.]

Nia (distressed): I wanna go too!
Ghaleon: I'll take you next time. Just be patient.

[Latona approaches the Guildmistress.]

Guildmistress (pleasantly surprised): ! Latona, good to see you. We're just about to start the test...

[Latona is looking down, in despair. But something else is apparently on her mind.]

Guildmistress: ...Latona?

-168-

Latona (threateningly): Don't you dare touch Zyne's ship.

[A vortex swirls up around Latona.]

Guildmistress: !!

Latona (raging): Vane was once our city, a Vile Tribe city. And you humans came and invaded it, piece by piece.
Morris (angry and sad): Latona, that’s enough.
Latona: Why should we have to go through with this... Why must you try to steal everything away from me!?

-169-

[Two students surround the Guildmistress to protect her and keep her back. One begins an incantation.]

Guildmistress: Latona, this is a misunderstanding. We--
Student 2 (nervous): Guildmistress!

[Tagak raises his hand and shields the students with a magic barrier. Morris is shocked.]

Latona: I've had it! This is enough! I refuse to live so miserably any longer. I will not give up anything more.
Latona: Not Vane. And not Zyne!!

[Latona unleashes her fury. Her ice spell knocks back the two students around the Guildmistress, though she is still safe within the barrier.]

-170-

[Ghaleon comes up behind Latona and tries to neutralize her with a lightning spell.]

Ghaleon: Latona--

[Latona raises her hand and Ghaleon is thrown back. He slowly picks himself up.]

-smack-
Ghaleon (pleading): Nobody wanted you to do this. Not my brother, not me, not anyone... Latona!!

[Latona continues, stonefaced.]

With terrible speed she gathered up the surrounding mana.

-171-

Latona (shouting): Vane is ruled by the strong.

No, you're wrong...

[Latona summons up an apparition of the Blue Dragon and looks towards the Guildmistress.]

Latona: Everyone who is weak shall be expelled from Vane!!

[The Guildmistress looks focused, her eyes closed.]

She is not Latona. Latona would know that the Guildmistress, beyond a doubt, is--

-172-

Guildmistress: Fire come forth!!

--strong!!

[The Guildmistress raises her hand and flames pour out.]

-173-

[The flames engulf Latona and her nullify her spell. All we see is the clash of magic.]

-thud!-

-174-

[The flames expand over Latona. A close up of her face, turned up, mouth open, screaming.]

-whirr-

-175-

[The Guildmistress watches as Latona is consumed. Tagak is grave, Ghaleon is anguished, and Morris is shocked. On Latona’s face appears a slight smile, as if at peace.]

-whirr-

-176-

[The flame begins to dissipate as the Guildmistress looks on, hands clenched and face grim.]

-swish-

[As the smoke clears, the ring Latona wore falls to the ground, smoking.]

-177-

[The Guildmistress watches, shocked.]

-clink-

[Several of the students bow their heads and turn away, one in tears, the others consoling. Ghaleon is still shocked; Morris grieved.]

-178-

[The Guildmistress stands before the ship. Smoke still rises from Latona's ring on the ground.]

Tagak (looking up): ......The wind has stopped.

[The Guildmistress closes her eyes and falls back against the ship's base, distressed.]

-thud-
Morris (angry): Had you held back, we would have been killed. You made the right decision!

Morris: The ship is now safe. We shall continue with the test!!
Morris: Now, climb aboard!!

-179-

[Nia runs up to the Guildmistress who embraces her. Nia is crying.]

Nia: Mo...mommy! Mommy!!
Guildmistress (comforting): ...Yes, I'm safe, too. Nia, why don’t you ride with us. You are the next Guildmistress, after all.
Guildmistress: You should be here for this moment in history.

[The Guildmistress carries Nia in her arms, heading towards the ship.]

Guildmistress: Ghaleon.
Ghaleon (curtly): I'm fine. We can go.

Student 1 (anxious): Guildmistress!!
Guildmistress: Don't worry. After all, who do you think I am!?

[The Guildmistress, Nia, and Ghaleon all board a platform which rises into the ship.]

-180-

[A throne-like seat is in the middle of a large chamber, connected to the walls. The Guildmistress sits down.]

-click-

[Her hand hovers over a glowing orb on the side. Energy flows across her; she becomes a blu, as if electricity is flowing through her.]

Guildmistress (shocked): !!
Ghaleon: Guildmistress, allow me to explain--
Guildmistress: I don't need it! The ship’s controls are now burned in my mind.

-181-

Guildmistress: ...If I couldn't handle this, then I wouldn't be fit to be Guildmistress.
Guildmistress: I'm on my own, as usual.

[We see the flying contraption -- airship -- still on its supports. The students and Tagak are watching in anticipation.]

Student 1: Fly...
Student 2: Please, fly...

[Nia grips Ghaleon's shirt; Ghaleon puts his hand on her shoulder comfortingly.]

Guildmistress: Fly!

-182-

[The airship rises and flies off, surrounded by the protective barrier. It clears Vane's border.]

-183-

[As it continues, the students watch happily and excitedly. Tagak and Morris likewise look up, appearing content; Tagak holds a small child in his arms. The walls of the chamber inside the airship go clear and we can see the surrounding sky and ground below through them.]

-184-

[The Guildmistress leans her head back in the seat, looking up in wonder, perhaps slightly exhausted. Nia tugs on Ghaleon's hand, smiling.]

Nia: It's like we've become birds.

[Ghaleon smiles back.]

For me,
By having this airship, I have my brother back.

Perhaps that's just the illusion I wanted to keep.

-185-

[We're at the transmission gate to leave Vane, surrounded by stone pillars. Ghaleon walks through them, looking up towards the sun and slinging a pack over his shoulder. Ghaleon waves to Morris, who raises a hand in greeting--the hand, Ghaleon notices, has Latona’s ring on it.]

-186-

Ghaleon: That ring...

[Morris raises his hand again to show the ring on his index finger.]

Morris: It's what’s left of our friend.
Morris: Can you deny who she was? When Latona met her end, she could see only a future in which she had no choice.
Morris: She lived her life in the past, no matter what became of Vane.
Morris (looking at the ring as it shines): She chose to become a part of the past, because of her misguided love. That foolish woman lost to her own pride.

-187-

Morris: Even then, I still say she was a good woman.

[Tagak, carrying Nia, is at the transmission gate now with several students and the Guildmistress around. The students seem downcast, the Guildmistress comforting one girl in tears. Nia is happily waving around a cap.]

Tagak: Ghaleon! Isn't this your hat?
Nia: I found it!

[Ghaleon takes the cap and holds it close to him, eyes closed, seeming to breathe in its scent.]

Ghaleon: I lost it that day... Thank you.

Ghaleon: The airship will remain in Vane. That was one of my brother's last requests. Please use it.

[The Guildmistress is taken aback. Nia is on the ground now, holding onto her mother and one student. Tagak moves forward with his head bowed.]

-188-

Guildmistress (soberly): ...We'll miss you.
Nia: Ghallie, where will you go...?
Nia: No, I wanna go too.
Ghaleon: Nia...
Nia: I want to go!

Nia (crying): No...

[Ghaleon places his hat on her head.]

Ghaleon: Nia, I'll return now and then. The only home I have is Vane.
Ghaleon: Hey, I'll leave you this hat as proof of my promise. You know, my brother gave me this hat when I was very young.

[Ghaleon smiles and wipes away a tear on her face.]

-189-

Nia: I'll become a great Guildmistress. I'll wait in Vane for you to return, Ghallie.

[Ghaleon, Tagak, and Morris step onto the platform of the transmission gate.]

Ghaleon: I'll write a letter every year for your birthday. I promise.

[The three of them transport to the ground.]

Morris: So, have we decided where we'll go? We only have a little free time, so let's go.
Tagak (looking at map): How about the sea? It'll be my first time seeing it.
Morris: All right. First, then, we'll go to the port town of Meribia.

[They continue onward from the transmission circle. Birds fly overhead behind them and Vane circles much higher. The Blue Star fills most of the sky behind them.]

-190-

[We see Vane much later, circling the Goddess Tower which is atop a high mountain.]

Before long, 120 years had passed.
Ghaleon returned to Vane, with wounds in his heart which would not heal in a lifetime.

[We see Ghaleon, much older now, about the same age as he is during Alex's days. His face is in despair, the pendant of his priesthood torn off and falling back.]

But, that is another story.
